THANK YOU FOR VISITING AROSWorld.org. AROS Research Operating System (AROS) is a free software/open source implementation of the AmigaOS 3.1 APIs. It is designed to be portable and flexible, and ports are currently available for x86 and PowerPC based PCs in native and hosted flavours. Other architectures are in development.
AROS used to mean Amiga Research Operating System, but, to avoid any trademark issues with the Amiga name, it was changed to the recursive acronym AROS Research Operating System.
The project, started in 1995, has over the years become an almost "feature complete" implementation of AmigaOS - with currently only a few lacking areas of functionality. This was achieved by the efforts of a small team of developers.
It can currently be installed on most IBM PC compatibles, and features native graphics drivers for video cards such as the GeForce range made by NVIDIA. As of May 2007 USB keyboards and mice are also supported. AROS is also planned to run on PowerPC boards Efika and Samantha 440.
While the OS is still lacking in applications, a few have been ported, including E-UAE, an emulation program that allows 68k-native AmigaOS applications to run in the same way a majority must be run on AmigaOS 4.0. Some AROS-specific applications have also been written. AROS has TCP/IP networking support, and it is also available an early stage of web browser (Traveller), for test purposes, among other Internet-related applications.
AROS is designed to be source compatible with AmigaOS, but not binary compatible. Source code that will compile on AmigaOS should compile on AROS, but binaries already compiled for AmigaOS will not run, even if they are compiled for the same family of CPU. This unfortunately means that, unlike MorphOS or AmigaOS 4, AROS is not capable of running legacy software directly, only applications compiled for AROS. There are plans to integrate the Amiga emulator E-UAE directly into AROS to run AmigaOS applications, and even a bounty to run MorphOS software on the PowerPC build of AROS, but so far (January 2008) these objectives remain elusive.

While browsing the web I spotted a screenshot of NoWinED.
NoWinED is a MUI-based TextEditor that can handle more files simultaneously, using different "pages" for each file. The fact that it is impossible to find a MUI TextEditor on Amiga powerfull enough to be used instead of Notepad/Editpad and other editors does not have a reason. Moreover, switching from one AmigaOS flavor to the other it is not always possible to use the same editor due to incompatibilities. NoWinED has born to be a portable MUI program, and in fact it exists for every Amiga flavour (OS3.9, OS4, MorphOS, AROS). Sadly not all the features are present everywhere due to some minor incompatibilities.
power2PEOPLE is pleased to announce its latest bounty initiative. Chris Hodges, the original author of the Poseidon USB system, has proposed to undertake the task of porting Poseidon USB to AROS and release his work under the APL (AROS Public License) transforming Poseidon USB into an open source project.

The binary archive contains also the source code patch, allowing in future to build new versions of client as well as port it to other Amiga systems.
Pavel Fedin has been assigned to port AROS onto Cygwin, a linux-like environment for Windows. If you would like to donate money to encourage Pavel's efforts, you can donate at the title link.
Basic emulation functionality shall consist of WinAPI graphics HIDD, native Windows keyboard and mouse HIDDs. These basic functionalities should be included by the tentative deadline of March 31, 2009. Further goals consisting of networking, sound support, and other functionality will not be required for the completion of this bounty.

HivelyTracker is a tracker program based upon the AHX format created in the mid '90s by Dexter and Pink of Abyss. The format was relatively popular, and many songs were created and used in scene productions and games. AHX was designed to create a very SID-like sound on the Amiga.
HivelyTracker can import and export modules and instruments in the AHX format, but it also improves on AHX in several ways and therefore has its own instrument and module formats.
Today, version 1.5 was released for OS4, and OS3.x! The AROS port will follow shortly.
Nick 'Kalamatee' Andrews has successfully added window snapshot option to Wanderer, slightly increasing AROS interface realiability. Now it is possible to save position, size and icon/all files view for any window on writable medias. For read-only ones, like CD and DVD ROMs, default size, position and view will be used. Kalamatee is now working on fixing icons snapshot too.
A few of you have noticed that a new AmiZilla website was launched recently. The talented artist that created it did a great job. AmiZilla has been a catalyst for change in the Amiga marketplace and an inspiration to all. AmiZilla shocked the Amiga market and even received wide press on Slashdot, Mozilla forums and many other news sites when it was launched in 2003. Many were caught off guard that an Amiga effort could bring in over $10,000 in donations, the Amiga is suppose to dead right? The Amiga is not dead, the AROS Bounty system, MorphZone Bounties and many other bounty systems were all inspired by AmiZilla and went on to collect thousands of dollars. DiscreetFX did not consider this competition to AmiZilla, in fact we embraced it and put lots of money into AROS Bounties, MorphZone Bounties and many others. The small community that is Amiga proved that it was not giving up and it was willing to pay for quality software to be ported to the Four Headsmen of Amiga.
GRUB 2 has finally been commited to the 1386 nightly builds of AROS (Screenshot). It means you can now use SFS for the DH0 partition. InstallAROS has also been modified to allow you selecting filesystem for DH0 and DH1 during partitioning step. Please download the latests ISO and report if it is working for you: - is the ISO booting on your hardware - is the installed system booting from SFS partition - any other remarks/suggestions.
