Hi,

I have being given a Dell E5410, the AROS HCL says to change the WIFI Card to an ATHEROS 5K

The existing card is a PCI-E 30x30 half card, I am struggling to find a suitable WIFI Card, can anyone help with recommendations?

An Atheros AR5BXB63 would work just fine. It's what I used in a Dell Latitude D520 and works great

Note: When changing the WiFi card you may have to adjust the settings in the BIOS like I had to do on my Dell Latitude D520. I had issues with the 1st Atheros card and replaced it with another, only to have the same issue. I then discovered that the BIOS had the WiFi card turned off. I have a forum thread about this on the new AE.org site https://ae.arosworld.org/index.php?topic=1031.msg13578#msg13578

Hi,

Thank you for the update, the Dell Latitude E5140 uses 30mm x 30mm PCI-E half Card WIFI adapter and the Dell Latitude D520 uses a PCI-E Card that is dimensional larger : 30mm x 50mm, which is too large for the Dell Latitude E5410.

Maybe have to get an older laptop.

If you planning on buying D520 please make sure you buy a version with 64-bit CPU, so that next year you can migrated to 64-bit distros.

Hi

The Dell E5410 has a Core i3 64 bit CPU, do should do.

But the WIFI Card is a Half PCI-E card which is 30mm x 30mm

Looking on eBay there are: Atheros AR5B95 type WIFI cards. Which I do not think is Atheros A5K

Hi,

The E5410 entry has been amended.

Atheros AR5B95, Acer Aspire One D250, might be covered by the ath5k module. You can try but last time (a long time ago) it was tested did not work. The only option might be a usb wifi as we have no support for newer smaller 30x30 modules like the ath9k, etc at the moment.

Just found a Atheros AR5B95 with very small press on stubs (yuck) and a metal extender, will have a test try when I have a moment. Sadly, it does not work.

I had this half-height vs full height problem with my Samsung n130. There is a way to solve it...

It works - I'm using this on my Samsung to post this :-)

Cheers,
Nigel.

Hi,

The looks like a good solution, there is a 128Gb 2.5" SATA drive installed at present, so moving to MSATA looks a good idea, and will make the data transfer faster.

Thank for the tip.

Oh, one more thing - there are some SATA to mSATA adapters which are 'long and thin' and others are 'short and fat' (the mSATA card mounts at right angles to the SATA interface). The 'short and fat' leves a good space for the wifi card.

Cheers,
Nigel.
