AROS4 is a free, open source operating system that reimplements the AmigaOS 4 API from scratch: the same libraries, devices and look that Amiga software expects, written new under an open licence, with no code from the original.

It boots on PowerPC machines (Sam460, AmigaOne X5000) and on ARM (Raspberry Pi 2, more boards coming), ships a modern GUI theme with light and dark modes, Unicode and colour-emoji fonts, a tabbed Shell, a Workbench with a single Preferences app, and runs classic software such as Directory Opus 4 out of the box.

In this video: the boot, the desktop, the new look, and where the project is heading.

Why it matters
• Amiga users: your software and your workflow, on hardware you can still buy, with a system you can read, build and fix yourself.
• Linux, macOS and Windows users: a small, fast, understandable OS with a 40-year lineage, a message-passing kernel and a desktop that fits in a few megabytes. If you like operating systems, this one is fun to read.
• Developers: C, a clean SDK, open build tree, everything on GitHub. Pull requests welcome.

AROS4 is not affiliated with Hyperion Entertainment, A-EON or Amiga Corporation. Amiga and AmigaOS are trademarks of their respective owners.

CoffeeAros or Caffeine OS ? ;-)

So, does that mean AROS4 is better than AROS?

I'm just joking, of course! I couldn't help myself. I had to say that. :-)

OS4 users see all the activity on AROS forums, OS4 wants to be successful like AROS.

I think it was the port of AROS to Raspberry Pi that caught their eye!

@ASiegel - The brand design looks cool but the name is obviously a disaster.

For the record, as Pascal may be able to confirm, I made the same argument with regard to "ARES" a number of years ago.

I find it difficult to imagine how someone can justify taking over the name of an established community project and then reusing it for a different project after changing one letter or adding a number. Clearly, this is going to cause confusion (as is evident by the numerous "actually, this is not really AROS" confirmations already).

Andrea is a goof programmer with many years of knowledge of the Amiga world.

In my opinion, his ideas need to be integrated, we need to find a way to understand how to collaborate because the Amiga origin is common and is part of our community.

He may be a good programmer however he was bastardizing the AROS name(he changed it to ARia). Using the name while simply adding a hyphen and a 4 yet never actually using the hyphen when talking about his incompatible project. He's said it himself it is not AROS it uses the AROS kernel but the userspace is entirely different even at the API level.

the goals of his project are not the same. He wants a 100% identical replic of OS4 and uses aros source codes at least as base. But the result is not a simple aros variant with some GUI changes. But perhaps it is at least possible to use source codes from there to add features at aros. We will see what future brings.
