For Python for AROS If it's built for mainline ABIv1 the best person to ask is Kalamatee about integration.

Try to join the discord channel.

The mailing list is sometimes slow to respond.

@coffeecat Then I need to adjust my targets and maybe support both from the start. Sorry that I'm asking- I need to catch up on the basics. I made too many assumptions up front.

That would be preferred. Possibly you could release "limited" version for AROS One users right now and full version for mainline.

Ideally, I'd prefer to build against mainline and know that users will get those, e.g., 3-6 months from now. For the package manager I work on, I will consider building the package from source. (GentooAROS Wink

Sounds interesting . Smile If this would be something like a publicly available build service, possibly more developers would be interested. Smile

Python 3.14 on AROS - a small progress report and a question

CPython 3.14.7 build for mainline AROS x86_64, cross-compiled from macOS. I'm still learning how AROS works, but a few useful things are running in the guest:

The interpreter, REPL, and some standard-library functionality

Sockets, DNS, and HTTPS through urllib, with certificate verification

A small API client and a single-threaded HTTP server

Offline installation of a pure-Python wheel with pip, tested with pyfiglet although cleanup still produces warnings
Threaded sockets need more work, subprocess launching is currently disabled, and additional C extensions cannot be loaded dynamically. The interpreter includes the available C modules. Installing pure-Python wheels directly from PyPI is still untested.

Even so, it seems useful for file tools, processing JSON, and talking to web APIs.

Indeed. It's already a GREAT achievement. Kudos!

Quote

What would you use Python for on AROS?

I've no time to dedicate for tinkering, but Python can be used from a "system language" (replacing the script used for the installer) up to controlling Blender.

Quote

Any small scripts or packages worth testing?

BeautifulSoup for web scraping, for example.

Quote

One question about dynamic loading

Looking through the sources, I noticed that LoadSeg already loads and relocates ELF ET_REL objects, while dlopen/dlsym appear unimplemented in posixc.

Could that be a starting point for loading AROS-built Python extensions? I assume resolving symbols from the interpreter is only part of the problem, with initialization, dependencies, and relocations to consider too.

I'm probably missing some history or technical details here. Has anyone explored this already? I mean extensions compiled for AROS, of course, not running Linux wheels.

Sorry, but I've no experience on that.

And Python for mainline should be available for testing in the next couple of days. I will need to check updates if it will be possible to launch it on Aros One.

Updates? There are big updates next month: Python 3.15 will be released (with an enhance JIT). Wink

Burntime Remastered for x86_64 (aarch64 and others later) is also close.

Not sure how well it will work and if at all, but a test with Pragtical (https://github.com/pragtical/pragtical) works:

And I took on Skia which seems to work as well in the CPU mode on ABIv11 (Skia is the basis for e.g. Chromium/Chrome and several other apps)

Skia is also needed by newer versions of WebKit (= Odyssey) so this is welcomed development, thanks!

GrafX2 was a side effect - I wanted to see if we can launch Aseprite (https://www.aseprite.org) on AROS.

~week later:

Aseprite now cross-compiles and links successfully for AROS x86_64 ABIv11.

The port uses a standalone, relocatable Skia CPU SDK built from Aseprite’s Skia m124 fork. Skia raster rendering, PNG decoding, and TrueType font loading and rasterization have already passed runtime tests on AROS in QEMU. Primitive SkShaper support also allows LAF’s text component to compile without HarfBuzz or ICU.

The full Aseprite build reaches 100% and produces a roughly 37 MB AROS ELF with no undefined symbols. The work required 25 reproducible patches covering platform integration and bundled dependencies. No changes to AROS itself, its SDK, or the compiler toolchain were needed.

Aseprite itself has not yet been run on AROS. The next milestone is a command-line batch test: load a PNG, save it as an .aseprite document, reopen it, and export it back to PNG. Native window creation, display, and input handling remain to be implemented before the graphical editor can run.

Hello AROS.

So, who's coming to AROS to make the next Stardew Valley? (it's still far from being usable, but frontend and Skia works)

It's not a final name but it's not a full port this time. It's a muPDF library with a Zune frontend written from scratch. So basically sky is the limit

Now with annotation superpowers

- Opens PDF files (1.x and 2.0) through MuPDF 1.28.4: embedded and base-14 fonts, vector graphics, JPEG/JPEG 2000/JBIG2 images, ICC-based colour
- Zune/MUI window with an Amiga-style menu: Project (Open, Save, Save As, About, About MUI, Quit) and Edit (Copy, Copy as Image, Highlight, Find, Find Next), plus a right-button context menu on the pages
- Opening via command line, an ASL file requester, or dragging a file icon from Workbench onto the window
- Continuous vertical scrolling of all pages, with pages of different sizes
- Thumbnail sidebar with page numbers and current-page marker; click to jump; sidebar width follows a draggable divider and the window size
- Page counter with Previous/Next buttons
- Keyboard navigation: cursor keys, PgUp/PgDn, Space, Home/End, Left/Right for pages; mouse wheel (written, not yet tested)
- Text selection by dragging, across page boundaries, with auto-scroll at the view edges
- Copy selected text to the clipboard as IFF FTXT (8-bit CHRS plus a UTF-8 chunk); read back correctly by the system Clip command
- Copy a rectangle as a 24-bit ILBM image to the clipboard (file is well-formed; MultiView shows it blank - unresolved)
- Text search with Find / Find Next; hits framed on the page
- Highlight selected text as a yellow PDF annotation, saved into the file
- Save in place incrementally (original bytes preserved) or Save As to a new file; unsaved changes are confirmed before opening another file or quitting
- Lazy rendering with a bounded cache; render times shown with -t; a 22-page paper renders at ~0.1–0.2 s per page under emulation

To be released soon.

Over time I will try to make it into a proper PDF reader/creator. Feature requests welcome.

Great job!

If you're using Datatypes to export the 24bit ILBM and it appears blank maybe because saving 24bit ILBM has not been implemented yet.

Great job, keep it coming!

To put on your list the things I'll gladly share:
A port of Zed (not really usable outside of Macaros, yet): https://github.co...x/zed-aros
A new file manager that is cross platform between Linux, Win, Mac, Aros, called Ferail: https://github.co...
But Aros needs some more work.
A package manager called pkg: https://github.co...x/aros-pkg
the test portal is here: https://aros-pkg....sites.net/
I also have this GUI library that the people from Zed developed in Rust on Aros. It works really well and Ferail in build on it: https://github.co...onent-aros

A new filesystem called AFS+, still Private: A portable, developer-first 64-bit filesystem for modern workloads, with low resource usage, crash safety, fast indexing, reflinks, and persistent change tracking.

I'll need Python and Perl to get Aros to self build...

I also booted Aros on a bare metal m1 for the first time yesterday.

Python for AROS is close, but to get most of it, we need all the patches I pushed to AROS ABIv1. I'm in the cleanup stage. Haven't looked at Perl - yet.
