Hi Luca and welcome to the forum, regarding AROS One my Distribution I can confirm that it is up to date with the latest Core, and includes all the fixes and upgrades done to date. AROS One is based on Wanderer (Workbench), inspired by my OS3.9 AfA One, is this distinguishes it from other distributions based on Dopus5 Magellan. Also on AROS One you will find a modern look, all the Icons, there are various types and shapes (to choose from) are in DualPNG, all of the same size and of very good quality, together with the backgrounds and many other graphical aspects have been created by me (70 years old Italian User AMiGA) There are still other Distributions, it's up to you to choose !

Hi all, I'm Luca, from Italy! I'd like to try AROS, but I'm not sure what distro to choose. The latest version of most of these distributions is quite old in time, dating back 3-4 years. The only recent release, as far as I can see, is from AROS One. I prefer testing something up-to-date, so my question is: is AROS One the right distro for me? Please don't be offended if I misunderstood anything in my distribution research! I'm sure that every distro have their value points! Thanks, Luca

@Deremon Hello and welcome! It is always good to see a fellow software developer joining our community. With regards to the hardware problem you mention, first it make sense to check the link that @AMIGASYSTEM posted to see if your hardware does not need some additional parameters with newer versions of AROS. Additionally at top of that page you have a list of recommended hardware which is quite cheap and possibly you'd need only to swap out motherboard. With the hardware you have, there are a few options you can try: 1) using the default grub menu item, edit it and add "bootmenu" to kernel parameters list. Does the bootmenu start? If yes, do you see your cdrom and harddrive in it? 2) try adding noapci kernel parameter in grub, often ACPI support for older hardware is problematic Also please share what motherboard you have and whether your CDROM is IDE or SATA.

Also, if you compile GitHub sources for vanilla AROS that is considered the "core" system. It only has the basic system files. It's better to use a distro such as AROS One x86 or even Icaros Desktop although it is based on older systems files. Tiny AROS is another one. The distros such as AROS One x86 are full of preloaded and preconfigured software. I like AROS One x86 because "it just works". Especially the sound and datatypes and themes are well done. The def_icons and descriptors are also well done. On supported hardware it just works.

Hi welcome to this, where are you from? Actually if the ISO starts from VM it means that the bootloader is correct, probably your PC is not supported at Hardware level, have you checked [url=https://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Aros/Platforms/x86_Complete_System_HCL][b]HERE[/b][/url]. If you forward your software to aros archive, they will be already available from the "Uploads" tab anyway, as soon as possible I would like to test them on AROS One, thanks

Hi all, I'm a new AROS user, I'm using it to "revive" an old AthlonXP PC, I've also a pistormed amiga500 and a core2duo with Amithlon. I'm toying around with AROS for some time now, I have also compiled a couple of programs using ABIv0 20220318-1 build (I'll file an upload request on aros archives soon). I've some questions about installing on real hardware (the athlonxp above) I've compiled abiv0-pc from git resulting in an ISO file, when I try to boot it on a virtual hw, I've no problem at all but when I try to do it on the real hardware (I've burned it on a DVD) AROS will simply stuck after grub (black screen with no DVD activity, tested all "graphic modes" ). I've tested it with Icaros Desktop and it will simply boot/installing and works well (although I've to copy three libraries to make compiled software work) Someone knows why the "standard" iso will not boot on real hardware? Is there anything I can do to make it work? Forgive my english not a native speaker

Welcome if you used to use amiga with aros you will be comfortable, there are currently no trackers with midi support we are waiting for Bars&Pipes and a future upgrade to Protrekkr which is a very professional software, if you want to set up a computer just ask

Hi, i used an Amiga about 11 years, not only for gaming :) but also for study. My last Amiga was a 2000 with a 50 MHz 68040 and 128 MB Ram. It is still here but i think it is unuseable because first my cat chewed on monitor cable and second i forgot to check the battery. During study i used AMOS for AI a solution. I remember that my Amiga was calculating about an hour. Because in the 90th i used a lot of Protracker for making untuned noises not real music but i emptied the bars in my small town and gathered the people at my location. I found some of my mods from later time on a modland.com. I thought they were forever lost because of an HD crash in the mid 90. I have an old machine here, i disconnected from net https://de.msi.com/Motherboard/865PE_Neo2P_Platinum_Edition/support#manual . I hope, i am able to build up a music tracker with that machine with Midi https://www.thomann.de/de/thomann_midi_usb_1x1.htm . I already bought a floppy that is able to read Amiga discs. Welcome among us Well you already have the system installed even if icaros desktop is quite obsolete, I deal with tiny aros another distribution, aros many years ago boasted of a state of the art browser now it doesn't but you have a dual boot system so in emergency you can use the mainstream browsers and work on aros at your leisure, unfortunately we don't have a printing system also but with brother printers you can use cloud printing with odyssey which is the browser of aros, if you want to play opengl games you have to have a compatible graphics card and these are not up to date but i don't know if that's a problem for you, for the network you always need a compatible ethernet card but it can be recovered with little money as for the graphics card, the applications do not need installer you unzip the archive and copy the content where you want, you should always have two partitions with aros one for the system and the other for your data so when you need to update you format only the system partition so that you always have with you your data, files always available, if you need clarification we are here;)

When installing AROS there are a few things to consider. First how compatible is the hardware. Also, I've installed AROS many times on real hardware and hosted on Ubuntu Linux. I've had no problems with Hard Disks or SSDs of 128GB or less. But anything larger may require some extra partitions. Then there is IDE vs AHCI modes. But thankfully there is much information available online and this forum is great to find answers to difficult or easy questions. Lots of good, dedicated, hard-working people here!

Welcome! Yes. AROS is definitely an alternative OS compared to Windows or Linux. It is quite different yet that difference makes it enjoyable to use. AROS is most similar to Amiga OS. So when searching for information about libraries, system files or file system structure you can also query the search engine (Google or whatever) for Amiga OS. Although AROS is different in some ways, usually the Amiga way is the AROS way as well.

Hello Khadas. Welcome to the AROS-Community! For first: As Ex-newbie, I recommening you to launch AROS inside an VM and playing with it - even if you are not a fan of VM's. AROS / Amiga is pretty different in some point in code, handling and also in daily use next to mainstream OSes. It makes first steps much easier when you are not in trouble by finding out, what driver for ethernet / wireless you require or if you running AROS on IDE / SATA or AHCI - those problems can be handled easily later when had first experiences with AROS. For second, Icaros Desktop Live was and is a famous distribution with many abilities for daily usage. Since after 2.3 had gain no update over approx. a year, it's better to use AROS One or Tiny AROS as your distribution to keep sure to be up to date with the lastest features. For third, you should check (if having no compactable hardware) the list of recommened hardware ([url]https://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Aros/Platforms/x86_Complete_System_HCL#Recommended_hardware[/url]) to gain full compactible hardware, where you can run AROS and using it as game-machine, office-computer or developing-source without having regular knowlegde-issuses as researching for ethernet-controller or graphic-card inside. Unfortunately Icaros is actually based on an old aros core. Suggest you to use aors one or tiny aros that are more up to date.

Hello Khadas, Nice to see you here :) AROS has a different structure than Windows and Linux so it requires some time to get used to, especially if you never owned an Amiga before. Ask your questions - there are a lot of people willing to help new users here!
